Video marketing was at one time impossible for the cash strapped upstart to reach the masses. The site YouTube changed all that a few years ago with entirely user created content. With video technology scalable to consumer budgets, it became possible to buy a high quality camera for a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand. From there, the user was limited only by his or her creativity. Now that the genie is out of the bottle on video technology and its scalability, how do you use it for the success of your business? How do you attract traffic with each new piece that you upload to the website when there are millions and millions of other videos out there? You do the following:

1) Have in mind what you are going to say.

Videos that do not have a clear focus are not going to track well enough in the site search rankings to gather eyeballs. If you have in mind what you are going to say ahead of time, complete with scripting and blocking, unless you're the rare personality, who is a natural when it comes to improv and well equipped at editing, then you are going to have trouble. By building a roadmap for success ahead of time, you will be able to create the type of content that people want to see without coming across as shoddy and unprofessional.

2) Don't make it available till it's ready.

With great power, it has been said, comes great responsibility. And you have a responsibility to your potential fans to create an interesting product that is unique from everything else but familiar enough to attract their interests. With video technology, there really is no excuse to fire off a piece of content to the masses until it is ready. Most cameras and computers can interface with one another well enough for proper editing. And it is in the "editing room" that truly successful video content is born.

3) Listen to feedback.

Not all the feedback that you are going to get on the YouTube website will be helpful. Some people leave comments just to try and start a fight with you or the legitimate commentators on your thread. Do your best to head these individuals off at the pass. Fostering a sense of community that encourages constructive praise and criticism is the only way that you will get better at what you do. Once you know who your true audience is, what they want, and how to reach them, the results will be easier to duplicate again and again. And once you have a few hundred viewers, who like what you have to say, it's easy for your venture to sustain itself.

Why WHAT You Say When Someone Comes to Your Site Can increase Your Sales and Profits  (www.pamperrypr.com)

One of the great things about having a website is giving people who want to find out about your business a place to ‘visit’ when they are online.  When prospects and existing customers can find out about you and what you have to offer, when they can come to your location and see what specials are available, it is bound to increase foot traffic and telephone calls even in today’s very competitive business environment.

In some cases, you may have someone working with you to ensure that your website is seen in the search engines when people in your city are looking for the product or service that you offer.  This is yet another good thing about having a website with good information on it. 

But one of the most important things to have on your website is the best reason to shop with you.  Marketers call this a “unique selling proposition,” or USP.   If you were to look at search engines for this subject, you would find a wealth of information on how it works in businesses.  Basically, when somebody visits your website, they should leave with the impression of why they should shop with you and not your competition.  It states in a very positive fashion what makes you important and ‘unique.’

Although being ‘unique’ is important, your USP should be stated in terms that matter to your customers.  In other words, you can say that all of your employees have PhD degrees, but if that fact has nothing to do with what the customer is going to buy from you, it does not make a good USP.  You will see this with both large and small companies alike.

For example, the large company Wal-Mart states their USP in these terms: “Low Prices everyday.”   But price is not the only way to write a USP.  Nordstrom’s, on the other hand, emphasizes quality and service.  The most important thing to do is to make sure that you understand what really motivates people to buy from you, and use that in your USP.

Writing your USP does take time and creativity, but when it is done right customers have something in mind about you that matters to them.  When they think of you, they are thinking of the reason they should buy from you.  But writing them does not come natural.  If big companies like Wal-Mart and Nordstrom pay advertising agencies to come up with slogans, campaigns and USPs, you can bet they are important.

However, you may not have advertising agency money to spend on a USP.  You also may not have time to take away from your business to do the research to find out why your customers really buy from you.  You are probably at your best making sure that your customers are satisfied and visitors leave your location with a good impression.

Christian publishing marketing consultant Pam Perry has been named one of the country's best social-media specialists.

She was a Top 100 Winner in a competition by the home-based business Web site StartUpNation.com, which identified Perry's Detroit-based Ministry Marketing Solutions among "the outstanding unsung heroes of our economy—home-based entrepreneurs."

A former public relations officer with The Salvation Army, Perry founded her own agency in 2000 to help predominantly African-American churches, authors and artists promote their events and releases.

A few years ago she began to focus more on helping clients understand how to use social media, from blogs and Facebook to YouTube. In addition to helping run promotional campaigns and events, she teaches churches and individuals how to maintain their own online presence.

"Publishers have been putting more responsibility onto authors to promote their books, but many of them don't know how to do it," she said. "They don't know about blogging and podcasts."

Perry said that following blogs and online updates, she believed that "video will be the next big thing ... not highly produced, but the slice-of-life type of things, with a mobile phone."

10 Branding Tips by Pam Perry, PR Coach

1. Hire a graphics firm and PR coach to brand you and help you develop all collateral materials (web, stationery, logo, cards, postcards, brochures) Have your coach help you with the tagline, mission statement, elevator pitch, newsletters, letters, project sheets, bios, firm description, etc.) to coincide with the brand and your message.

2. Develop a timetable/calendar of outreach to the media and social media: What to do daily, weekly, monthly. See my Synergy Energy book.

3. Regularly write and distribute news releases to the media and places live PRWeb.com and BlackPR.com

4. Participate (attend, speak, host, present, show) in at least two national and local industry conferences. (hear below)

5. Have an opt-in box on your website and send out regular autorepsonders. .

6. Get known for expertise by writing articles, blogging, doing teleseminars and speaking at organizations events (even if for free!)

7. Develop tip sheets about your Unqiueness! What makes your different and what are your BENEFITS! Include these differentiating tips as the basis for all your branding statements.

8. Post your calendar of events and appearances on your website/blog with links.

9. Promote via social media your appearances before and after each event.

 10. Optimize your website to be informational based so that search engines can find you, and clients can read material that shows your expertise.

Max Siegel made history as the highest ranking African-American executive in NASCAR when he became President of Global Operations at Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Before that, he held dual titles at Sony/BMG, serving as both senior vice president of Zomba Label Group, where he was part of the executive team overseeing the careers of stars such as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Usher; and as president of Zomba Gospel, where he helped mastermind the unprecedented success of gospel greats such as Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond and Donnie McClurkin.

Step 1: Define your target audience.

Who is your main customer? What do they look like? What do they watch? Listen to? What other media do they consume? The more research you do the more you can identify and target your ideal customer to BUY YOUR BOOK!

UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET… Once you have an idea, research it. Check Amazon and see if any similar books exist. Is there a need for your book? How will your book be different? Will it withstand the competition? Find out everything you can about your topic; become the authority.

Step 2: What’s your PLATFORM?
Find your “book hook.” What message are you marketing?
Get your message “out there!” But what do you want to say? Are you an expert? An evangelist? Do you want to position yourself as a “brain” or a “creative” – or do you have endorsements that will speak volumes for you? Whoever endorses you will “pin point” how you will be perceived/branded in the market. Make sure your message that you communicate makes the media say “wow” and not yawn. Examine yourself and find your unique selling position. Why is your book worthy of media attention?

Talk to everyone you know, network, get a marketing mindset! Find places to start, get bookings to teach/speak and work your way up. Make your initial mistakes locally, and build a devoted following close to home. Take speaking, voice or acting lessons, or hire a media or PR coach. Join the local Toastmasters or the National Speakers Association. You’ll get practice speaking in front of people, feedback and contacts for places to speak. Video yourself; critique yourself; and practice a lot. You want to shine for the media and make your “followers” proud.


Step 3: Build a media “wish list”
We would all love to be on Oprah, Tom Joyner, Steve Harvey and TBN…that’s a for sure best-seller status. But starting out, get a focused, realistic media database that reaches the core target audience. What do they read, watch and listen to? Do you really know the media? Google the media that matches your platform.

Find addresses at websites. Although websites seldom reveal addresses of print or broadcast contacts, they’re a good place to find the addresses of website editors and content producers, and to figure out the company’s addressing system. You can sometimes find e-mail addresses using online directories such as Yahoo’s People Search. Also, Linkedin.com is a good source. I know tons of authors who have made personal contact with producers through social networking sites like facebook, myspace, or twitter.

Another smart way to find e-mail addresses is to browse the message boards or blog at websites for newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and TV stations. Reporters and producers often respond to comments and criticism on these boards and blogs, and their e-mail addresses are usually displayed along with their messages

Use Eblast services too to “stir up the buzz” and get the word out immediately to the masses.

Step 4: Create dazzling press materials.
If you’re trying to pitch Essence, “O” magazine or your local weekly neighborhood newspaper, you better come correct. You only have one chance to make a first impression. Get customized press kit folders if doing mailing. Or get graphics help to design your EPK (electronic press kit). But whatever you do, get great author photos. A picture is worth a thousand words – and a “glamour” shot will get you noticed. Even in the Christian market, being attractive sells more books. Make sure your press releases, fact sheets, articles and pitch letters stand out from the crowd and “position” yourself. BRAND!

In this electronic age, having a top-notch Website and Electronic Press Kit (epk) will show that an author is professional. Increasingly, editors are viewing them as tickets to the game.

Step 5: Media contacts – they are your friends.
How do you meet the media? Go where they go. Go to conferences where you know media will be there like the Gospel Heritage Conference, The PowerNetworking Conference, The Stellar Awards, ICRS (formerly CBA) and even the regional/local National Black Association of Black Journalists. Not even a bad idea to join as an associate member. You’re a writer, right? Networking and building relationships is critical. If you can meet them, keep in contact by commenting on their work – so they know you’re just not “begging” allll the time – but really are an educated media consumer. (Also, get their name right!)

When you prove yourself as an “expert” and dependable source of information, you get reporters to contact you over and over. And they will tell their friends about you because you will become known as a good source.

But never brow beat and badger a reporter/producer with unwanted phone calls, faxes or E-mails – that’s a quick way to make an enemy with the whole industry. If they don’t respond, ask them why and then move on. There are tons of other media that will reach your target market. Use your time and energy wisely and don’t be a pain – and when you really have something to contact them about – just a quick email is all that is needed.

FINALLY and most importantly: REMAIN ENCOURAGED, STEADFAST AND prayerful. Prayer is the key.
